Out with the old...

My boss is cleaning house. This week today is my only day off. The plus side is there will be extra money, the down side is, I will be BEAT. The one girl yesterday got sent home in the middle of her shift and taken off the schedule for a week. Her uncle tried to rape her daughters that night. She was irritable and upset. It reflected in her treatment of the guests. My owner D, said that he would prefer you not to come in if you are having a crisis. The people she waited on said they will never come back. This girl is probably one of my closest work friends. I tried to plead her case to D., but he said business is business and if you can't separate the two, and your personal life starts affecting his establishment, than what choice does he have? Right now employers have the upper hand. They know it too. D. is one of the most decent bosses I have had in years. He is fair and that is all I expect from any boss. Sadly, too many people have taken advantage of his "fairness". He said nice doesn't seem to work. So once again a few bad apples have spoiled it for the whole bunch. He took me in the office and showed me a piece of paper. This paper showed that we were $5,000 down from this date last year. Yes, it is due to the economy. His point is that EVERY customer counts, especially in the hard economic times. So I will continue doing what I do. I have a question for all the working folks. Do you notice a change in the attitude of your employers? Are you walking around on egg shells at work out of fear? Feel free to vent/share whatever...

My saving grace is working for local government for 30 years makes me a hard person to get rid of. the other part is I am too damn smart, however, my boss and I are on opposite poles on a current environmental issue we are involved in and he is being very difficult.

I have no employer but even when times are good they always had the upper hand when it came to "at will" employees. hence the reason for all of the union busting that has happened since Reagan.

Lori,
No, I am not walking on eggshells, but I probably should be. It's a good job, so I should be more careful with it.

Sorry to hear of your work environment. I hope your friend gets put back on the schedule.

Love, SB.

Whitemist-That is the one good thing about being a government employee...It must be tough if you and your boss are not on the same page. It is hard when you know in your heart you are right about an issue. Especially when it comes to the environment...So many people take our planet for granted. I feel like we, humans, are a walking virus with shoes. The work you do is incredibly important. Hopefully your boss will come around to your way of thinking....

WM- I love that term, at will..Maryland is an at will state. I am fortunate in the fact that my boss likes me, and I have had a set schedule. I just never forget that in the blink of an eye I could be unemployed. It's always in the back of my mind...

SB- Actually I am doing alright at work. I know how to play the "game". My friend got her shifts back this week. She is very good at what she does and is an asset to have there. D knows it I think, but his stress level is super high,as he owns two Denny's. I try to remember that his plate is full also. I know I bitch and whine about working, but I am blessed to have a job. Like you chicky, I would never leave my house if I didn't have a job, lol...The world is a little too scary at times...
